Sun Care Everyday

Sun Care Everyday Jacqueline Wens

We often think of sun protection as summer specific. But in reality, we should be wearing it everyday, rain or shine—no matter the season.

The sun’s rays can be harmful. What’s even more harmful is not protecting your skin.

Another damaging factor can be going overboard and slathering our skin with “sun protection" that’s actually loaded with toxic chemicals—so toxic that it may even increase sunlight-related cancers. Not to mention the damaging effects of chemicals (such as oxybenzone), found in many sunscreens, bleaching our coral reefs.

That said, sunlight is an important source of vitamin D—aiding bone & muscle health—regulating our metabolism, and even boosting our mood through serotonin. Recently, I’ve been thinking about the importance of finding a balanced relationship with the sun and wanted to shed some light on being more sun savvy.

Sun Savvy Tips:

-Try to avoid direct sunlight between the hours of 10am and 4pm, as it’s at its most intense.

-When shopping, search for a “full spectrum” or “broad spectrum” sunscreen, meaning that it protects against both UV-A (aging rays) and UV-B (burning rays).

-Make sunglasses your favorite accessory. Look for a pair that protects from UV-A and UV-B rays. Like my favorite pair of Celine Oversized Sunglasses (featured in the photos).

Whatever your method of sun care is, just to be sure to use sun sense and take care of your skin. Two of my favorite sunscreens are True Botanicals- Everyday Sheer Coverage and Kari Gran- Three Sixty Five.
